According to Bert Fish Medical Center CEO Bob Williams, he hears that phrase several times, every week at the hospital located in New Smyrna Beach. "It comes to us from patients-both local and vacationers-and from physicians," said Williams. "Actually, it is fun to brag on the cards and letters complimenting our nurses!"
As he recently celebrated his second anniversary at Bert Fish, Williams held an open forum for his staff at the medical center: "We recognize that nursing is more than a job. It is a calling" he stated. "People who become nurses have the daunting task of taking care of people who are hurt, sick or broken."
In the weeks and months to come, hospital administrators say the community will hear a lot of talk about the new "patient-centered care" program at Bert Fish. It is an effort that involves an on-going commitment by the nurses already at the hospital and a new recruitment effort to attract new nurses. "As we look to hire new nurses to take care of our increasing number of patients, we are looking for people who are committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care like no other hospital," said Pam Corliss, the Chief Nursing Officer at Bert Fish. "That means we want nurses who want to be excited about their work, each day, and are dedicated to our mission of healing."
Nurses are given the challenge to deal with a lot of unknowns when a patient comes through the doors of Bert Fish Medical Center, says Corliss. "Our nurses realize that the man or woman seeking care is probably not in the best of moods, and that he or she can be scared, anxious and, certainly, nervous," she said. "Our goal is to make that patient experience the best it can be."
As recruitment for new nurses in Southeast Volusia County continues, administrators point out that nursing requires a lot of important qualities including critical thinking, math and science skills, teamwork, along with organizational and time management abilities. But most of all, nursing is about compassion and caring for others.
Nursing at Bert Fish Medical Center offers a chance to truly make a difference everyday in the lives of those who choose our hospital for their care or treatment of a disease.
